Herbert Hideo Awazu, 72, of Papaaloa died March 4 at home. Born in Ookala, he was a retired chief generator operator for the former Hamakua Sugar Co., custodian at Laupahoehoe School and member of Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Friday, March 22 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire, no flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by brothers, Charles (Amy) Awazu of Los Angeles and Paul Awazu of Honolulu; sisters, Eiko Fujino of Paauilo and Mae Mayhall of Big Springs, Texas; nieces and nephews. Carla Napua Kekuewa Freitas, 74, of Honaunau died March 3 at home. Born in Kona, she was a retired park ranger at Pu‘uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, St. Benedict’s Kumiai, founder of the St. Benedict’s Food Pantry and president of Ohi Lauhala a Puhala preservation organization. Wake service 6 p.m. Friday, March 22 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Honaunau. Visitation 8-10 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at the church. Mass at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. Aloha attire, flowers welcome. Susan Lynn Harper, 58, of Keaau died March 11 at home. Born in Saipan, Marianas Islands, she was a certified diver and worked for the U.S. government to clean up oil spills. Services held. Survived by parents, John and Lou Harper of Colorado; brothers, Gary (Mary) Harper and Wayne Harper of Colorado; sisters Linda M. Hunt of Kauai and Deborah (Doug) Bentley of Virginia. James Hikaru Hinomiya, 70, of Pahoa died Feb. 20 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired school bus driver and member of Solid Rock Ministries in Pahoa. Josephine “Joping” Lorenzo, 70, of Kalapana died Feb. 23 at home.
